Who was Jesus Christ?

The real name of Jesus Christ

Jesus' last name was not "Christ". This was a title that reflected the early Church's recognition of Jesus of Nazareth as the Messiah, and called him "Christos" which in Greek meant "the Anointed One" and was synonymous with the Messiah to Jews.

Many have also pointed out that Jesus' first name was not "Jesus", but Yeshua. Some have even gone to say that it is incorrect, and even sinful to call Jesus by the name "Jesus" and not "Yeshua". But this notion is incorrect. Although it is a fact that Jesus' name in Hebrew was indeed Yeshua, and would have been called such, there is nothing wrong with being called Jesus, which is a correct transliteration of the Latin IESVS, which is a transliteration of the Greek Iesous. This is confirmed by the fact that the entire New Testament uses the transliterated Greek Iesous. Joshua is also a variant of Yeshua. This is reflected by the fact that the Eastern Orthodox book of Joshua is called the book of "Jesus Nave" (Nave being the son of Nun).

In 1st century Judea, there were no last names as we have today, but since people in their respective towns generally knew each other (or at least in their neighborhoods), the pedigree, "son of" was added, so Jesus' name would have been Jesus son of Joseph (Yeshua bar Yahosef), similarly to the Theodotus Inscription (Theodotus son of Vetellus) and for those outside Nazareth, he would have been known as Jesus of Nazareth.

In conclusion, it is true but also irrelevant that Jesus was never called Jesus Christ to his person. The early Christians probably gave the name "Jesus Christ" in the first decade of the Church's existence, and the title is already found in Paul by 51 AD (1 Thessalonians 1:1), betraying the fact that it must have been commonly accepted for years prior to then.
